I got this to set up a home VPN for use when traveling abroad, so that I could access my computer's files and not have to worry about having access to US streaming services etc. This works great for this, after a pretty quick setup I just needed to get the Wireguard app on my phone, and I'm connected to my home's network from anywhere. My only (very small) complaint is that this device does get very hot, so I made sure to keep it on a coaster to avoid potentially damaging my desk. I also wish it had Wifi, but there are other devices (for a higher price) if you need this feature. Happy overall.

My use case is probably more specific than most, and this is where this device would shine. I am a digital nomad, and wanted to setup a Zero-Tier device at my home, so I can leverage the public IP at my house (in case my corp office ever blocks cloud-based Wireguard VPNs). I did NOT want to replace my existing router, since my current router is more powerful than even the Gl.inet Flint. So I wanted a dedicated device for Zerotier only, and did NOT need wifi. I hooked this into the LAN port of my existing powerful router. I hooked this into my Zerotier account and figured out the routing. I can now pull my house IP on my cell phone via Zerotier app, so the routing is working. However, the speed is slow (which i guess doesn't surprise me). Next, I need to figure out how to force my travel router (beryl AX) to force traffic through the zerotier network as well. Overall, it does what I need it to do in a small an efficient form factor.

That being said, it is good to restate that my use case is very specific. I have used this as a dedicated zerotier server/endpoint ONLY, and nothing more. I did NOT want to replace my existing router. For this use case, this is the correct device for my needs.

This is a no brainer solution for remote tunneling back to your home network. I am not an IT pro so set up was a bit tricky. The Brume2 is the easy part. It's the particular, less documented ISP modem firewall settings you need to be familiar with to make it work. In my situation I have ATT Fiber with a Netgear Mesh router. All of my hair pulling was caused by the ATT Fiber modem. But rest assured the Brume gateway works great once you dial in the modem settings. Basically the ATT modem does not have port forwarding. You have to use IP Passthrough. Set the IP Passthrough to the mac address of your main router. You also have to delete all the default packet filtering rules set by the modem. I have the Brume gateway behind my Netgear router. The Netgear assigns a NAT IP address to the Brume. If your gateway is behind your router you will set port forwarding to the IP of the gateway. Make a note of the Brume default port number and forward to the same port number. Should work like a charm.

If you are looking for a device that is going to be simple to configure, or require no configuration at all (Plug n Play) then you need to look elsewhere.
This device runs on OpenWRT system software, and to configure this for use as a VPN server/client is going to require some knowledge in Linux, networking, and open-source software.
Now with that being said, if you know what you're doing, or are willing to put some work into researching and learning these topics, you will find some very unique and creative ways to implement this in both a home and travel setting.
It's open-source framework allows for lots of customization and modification, but that's not going to be what the average consumer wants to deal with.
My only real gripe with this product is its price point, even with the 10$ discount I got on it. Because this is not a complete plug and play solution I don't believe it should cost so much, especially when considering the cost of a VPN service should you choose to use one.

Reviewed in Canada on May 11, 2024
I bought the Brume 2 to use my home IP address while working remotely. The device is behind the Helix Videotron router and is connected only to the router. It works as a WireGuard VPN server and allows me to connect remote desktop to my come computers using Windows WireGuard client.
Great product! Works even better when it is paired with GL.iNet GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX). Using two devices I was able to eliminate the Windows WireGuard client, which was conflicting with other software, and work completely as if I was at my home office. Very happy with the purchase.

Connection via Ethernet from my SKY modem/router, enabled VPN client on device (Mullvad), any that supports Wireguard or OVPN (will be slower though) will do and connected to my ASUS router via Ethernet & Bob's your uncle, it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leistungsstark und zuverlässig – Perfekt für VPN-Nutzung
Reviewed in Germany on October 1, 2024
